What are the benefits of the IB program?

What is meant by the IB program?

International Baccalaureate or IB program is the international method of offering high-quality teaching to students. There  are four programs offered by IB schools and they are based upon age. They are as follows:

  •         CP or career-related program  for the age group 16 to 19
  •         MYP or middle year program for age group 11 to 16
  •         PYP or primary year program for age group 3 to 12

The four programs develop continuity, and the syllabus of each program varies beyond expert teaching in academic subjects, focusing on social, emotional and intellectual development. At present, the IB program is available in about 4700 schools all over the world and serves as an excellent choice for expat children and their families. Let us discuss the benefits of the International Baccalaureate program in brief.

Know the IB’s role in cultivating independent thinkers!

The curricula and teaching style of IB is mostly student-centric. They aim to assist students in developing into open-minded, caring, principled, independent and knowledgeable thinkers by motivating self-directed inquiry. The students learn on their own by participating in inquiry about real-life problems. They look forward to community projects that cater to their interests and thus master service learning. They also work on independent research projects and showcase how to inculcate the values mentioned in the IB student profile to become all-rounded citizens.

The IB also promotes cultural awareness by providing students with a chance to study a second language. The IB programs are presently provided in Spanish, French and English. The second language is provided in various modern languages and Greek and Classical. At some places in Singapore, IB is offered in the form of a bilingual program.

The PYP program supports the learners who are fresh to the instruction language. The DP and MYP are available as bilingual programs where both would contain the main subject referred to as Language Acquisition. It needs students to pursue a second language comprising its cultural origin. According to the IB principles, the students are motivated to select from a wide range of second languages. There are courses easily available for beginners and also for students who have prior knowledge of the second language.

How IB education caters to the requirements of third culture toddlers

Most third culture kids would have relocated once or several times. There are numerous opportunities connected with moving abroad, and there is also an equal level of challenges. The IB or International Baccalaureate is an excellent choice for the expat child as it follows the international standards. The curriculum is similar to World Class IB schools. For example, if the child is studying in an IB school in Singapore and later transferred to the United States, he/she gets the chance to enrol in the same IB program. Thus, there would not be any changes in their education.
